Sunday mornings at the laundry mat

October 16, 2022

Our plan was always to have the washer and dryer in the barn for us to readily use when we moved out here. That piece of the plan has not yet come to fruition. So Greg and I have alternated going to the laundry mat each Sunday morning. You’d think since we have no kids at home and have limited items of clothing in the spacious RV closet (that’s a joke) and are reusing bath towels a couple days in a row, laundry would be limited. Well this space is small, and our shedding dogs create quite the hair display on our bedding as they sleep in luxury snuggled amongst the comforters. So we’ve come to wash the bedding each week. Not just the sheets, the blankets and comforters too. I sleep with a heavy blanket and heavy comforter and Greg has his own comforter. Needless to say most of our laundry is heavy bedding taking the larger washers.

Let me digress for a second on the cost of the laundromat. The “large” commercial washers really only handle one of our comforters if you actually want it to get clean.  Do you know what they cost??? $4.75 each. Insanity.

As a result, we need to do about 8-10 loads each time:

  • Three for comforters
  • One for sheets
  • One for bath towels
  • One for dogs towels
  • One for dark clothing
  • One for light clothing
  • Two for my clothing which need to be more delicately handled…Greg does nothing delicately…but he has handled my clothing well thus far.

Drying is cheaper, probably because they discourage you from drying by making the dryers so hot you really don’t want to dry much outside of the towels and bedding for risk that they will be ruined. We can dry everything in about 5 dryers and only for about a buck each so as to not scorch them.

What does that add up to? About $52.50 each week and that’s prior to the already expensive laundry detergent.

What’s the point to this discussion?

First, dogs are more work than kids. Second, maybe I should do an economic lesson for the laundry mat crowd. 16 weeks on laundry will pay for a new washer and dryer, yes probably the low end version but cheaper none the less!

Closing thoughts….Thanks to Bex for the Monday morning puking in the bed, making sure to hit each of the newly washed comforters and sheets, so that we could go and do them all again Monday night.

And the best visual thus far during my laundromat excursions. I spy a Budweiser at 11am on a Sunday morning.
